Frederic Morgan (Ted) Cowles III died May 7, 2020 at 87 years of Covid-19
related complications. Born to Frederic Morgan, Jr and Dorothy (Smith) Cowles,
he grew up in West Hartford, graduated from Loomis in 1951 and from
Middlebury College in 1958. He served three years in the U.S.M.C. Ted
married Janet von Wettberg and they raised their family in Simsbury. Ted was
an active member of St. Alban’s Church in Simsbury for over 50 years. He
worked in the investment department at Travelers. Ted served on the board
of the Canton Land Conservation Trust, was a member of the Rotary Club of
Avon-Canton, Maple Syrup Producers Association of Connecticut, and
Appalachian Mountain trails committee. He particularly enjoyed
woodworking, outdoor construction projects, watching the UConn women
play basketball, and time spent at Lake Winnipesaukee in NH.
He is survived by his wife Janet Cowles of Bloomfield, children Laura Hobbs of Middletown, Adine Watkins of Indianapolis, and Frederic Morgan (Rick) Cowles IV of Canton, grandchildren Kaitlin and Courtney Cowles, Colin Hobbs, and Avery and Joanna Watkins, and brother and sister-in-law Robert and Berthe Cowles of Charleston, SC.
A memorial service will be held at St. Alban’s Church at a date to be announced later. Donations may be given to Canton Land Conservation Trust https://www.cantonlandtrust.org or Lakes Region Conservation Trust in NH https://lrct.org.
