Eloise Frances Carrington Schipke

SCHIPKE, Eloise Frances Carrington. Eloise Frances Carrington Schipke (100), Medical Technologist, Artist, Writer passed away June 26, 2024. Born September 21, 1923, in Stovall, Granville Co., NC, daughter of Luther Macon Carrington and Lucy Pearl Hobgood, she grew up on the family farm in Burkeville, VA and was the last surviving Carrington sibling (seven full and ten half). She was predeceased by her loving husband and partner of 59 years Raymond Edgar Schipke, M.D. Highly intelligent and accomplished from a young age, she excelled in school. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Burkeville High School (VA) as Valedictorian, completed a year internship at Watts Hospital in medical laboratory, and received her degree from Duke University majoring in English. She worked at both Watts Hospital and Duke University hematology labs where she met her husband during his Pediatric residency and hematology fellowship. They were married in 1951 at his family home in Meriden, CT and together established a residence and a medical practice (of 38 years) in West Hartford in which she played a major role in its success. Well-rounded, artistic, and proficient in all endeavors, she was a gifted sculpturer and prolific and talented painter of portraits, nature, and landscapes in both oils and watercolors, and served a transformative tenure as President of the West Hartford Art League. Also, an accomplished writer and voracious and avid reader, (particularly historical biography) she wrote innumerable critiques for the book review section of the Hartford Courant and was invited repeatedly to judge the paper’s annual essay contest. She possessed an incredible work ethic and an innate ability master anything she tried from sewing and home decor (clothes, slipcovers, and draperies), tailoring, and knitting, to gardening and furniture and clock refinishing. Most notably she was a world class baker of delectable pies and exquisite breads and rolls and a talented musician, playing both the piano and the Hammond B-3 organ. She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star, the DAR, and was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 60 years (chairing several fairs). She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter and best friend Dr. Rae Carrington Schipke, Her loving sons Norman Carrington Schipke (Jacqueline) and Dr. Michael Carrington Hardy (Sarah) as well five  grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  She was a beautiful, loving, kind, and generous mother and a woman of great intelligence, talent, grace, and dignity. She will always be the heart and soul of the Schipke family.
