Warren Flanders Smith

Warren Flanders Smith, affectionately known as "Flanny" and "Opa", 87, of Windsor Locks, CT, departed this life on July 27, 2024. Born on January 22, 1937, in Branford, CT, he was the son of the late Warren Flanders Smith Sr. and Jane Schaefer Smith. His life was one of diligent service, marked by his dedication to his country, his profession, and his loved ones.

Flanny valued education and was considered by many as a life-long learner. His education started at the University of Connecticut where he received a Bachelor's Degree. Following his graduation, Flanny served in the United States Army, attending the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California where he would learn German. It was during this time that he met his wife, Monika, while stationed in West Berlin during the Cold War. After his service, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to obtain a Master's Degree in mechanical engineering. Flanny proudly worked as a metallurgist until his retirement at the age of 82. He made significant contributions to the field, holding many patents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office related to his expertise.

Beyond the accolades of his professional life, Flanny cherished his family history and their 110-year-old cabin known as Camp Nutmeg located in New Hampshire on Lake Winnipesaukee. At Camp Nutmeg, he developed a wealth of knowledge in mushroom picking, carpentry, electrical work, and even built his own workshop. In his older age, Flanny would continue to manage projects at the camp, supervising friends and family while enjoying a cold beer. As an avid reader, he enjoyed gifting his history books to his children and grandchildren.

Flanny leaves behind a legacy of love, steadfastness, and well-timed jokes. He is survived by his devoted wife, Monika Smith, his children Christine Wozniak (Freddie) and Stephen Smith, grandchildren Jessica Wozniak (Justin), Jenna Wozniak (Caleb), and Josh Wozniak. He is remembered by his son-in-law John Wozniak and nephew Richard Dean (Karen). He is predeceased by his sister, Janyce Dean (Robert). Flanny's memory will forever be a beacon of the values he held dear.

His departure is a solemn occasion for all who knew him. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Flanny will be laid to rest with all due reverence, and his family finds comfort in knowing that his life was well-lived, full of purpose and love.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the New England Human Animal Bond Foundation in Columbia, CT, reflecting his compassionate spirit and love for animals.
