Agnes Carney 1934-2020

Agnes Bernadette Carney, 85, passed peacefully, with her loving family by her side, on June 20 in Cromwell, CT, to join in heaven her husband, Philip J. Carney, and daughter, Phyllis Carney Marzen. Born on August 16, 1934 in Darby, PA, and living most of her years in the Philadelphia, PA, Colwyn, PA, Wilmington, DE, and South Jersey areas, Agnes was the daughter of the late Stephen A. and Agnes J. Higgins. Agnes is survived by her son, James J. Carney, M.D., and his wife Sandra of Glen Allen, VA; her daughter Nancy C. McMahon, Au.D., and her husband John, of Cromwell, CT; brothers Jack Higgins and Daniel Higgins of FL; her sister Ann Petty of FL; seven grandchildren, Shana (Sean Spannuth), Julia, Katherine, Sarah, Alyssa, John, and Bernadette and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, husband, and daughter, she was also predeceased by her siblings Joseph, Stephen, Marcella, and Francis.

Agnes was recently described by her brother Danny as “extraordinarily ordinary”, a perfect description for a woman who never asked for anything from anyone. She was quietly faithful with a devotion to the Rosary and Blessed Mother. Her family was always her life. Her children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends will always remember her for never missing a birthday, holiday, or special event with a meaningful card or gift. May we all aspire to be as selfless and thoughtful in our lives as Agnes was in hers. While our hearts may be heavy today, we take comfort in knowing Mommom is at peace.

A Mass of Christian Burial is to be scheduled for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make donations in Agnes’ name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, www.jdrf.org.
