In Loving Memory of Alexandra Mortimer Barnett. Born and raised in New Haven, CT.

May 25, 1944 – February 6, 2026

She was a true spitfire. Sharp-minded, sarcastic, and unapologetically herself right up until the end. With a dark sense of humor and a quick wit, she had a way of saying exactly what everyone else was thinking… whether they were ready for it or not.

She was first married to John Alvin (Jack) Barnett (Widowed), the love of her early life. Together they built a family and a partnership where they were always on the same page and always on the same team. They loved each other deeply often joking that they loved each other more than they loved their kids, but they never hesitated to put their children first.

She was a devoted mother to John Barnett, Elaine Barnett-SanAngelo, Dennis Barnett, and Cathleen Barnett-Hasty. A proud grandmother to Alexis Barnett-Moreno, Kimberly and James SanAngelo, Megan Barnett, Daniell keane, David J and Jamie Jensen.

Later in life, she found a second great love with Skip Squires, who gave her a true second lease on life. One filled with adventure, road trips, and laughter. Through their blended family, she embraced Kimberly Lemoine, Laurie, Samantha, and Gary Squires, Amanda Tezyk, and Rayleen Rinaldi. Along with grandchildren who include Audrey and Alex Kemes, Colin and Kyle Squires, Evan and Tyler Volpert,

With a combined total of 19 great-grandchildren who brought her plenty of love and light.

She loved bowling, puzzles, flea markets, tag sales, and long road trips. She was an avid reader and had a legendary collection of salt and pepper shakers. She adored cats, drank her coffee strong, and had very strong opinions about people (most of whom she didn’t like).

She hated sports, celebrations, and unnecessary nonsense.

She was best known for her macaroni salad, potato salad, and her infamous “special sauce” kept in a squeeze bottle.

Her favorites included the color blue, cats over people, Skip, Dad, Pontiacs, and 1950s music. A talented violinist, she loved being out and about, staying active, and living life fully on her own terms.

She passed surrounded by family who loved her deeply. She was strong, sharp, and fully herself until the very end and she will be missed more than words can say.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life, with a potluck in true Alex fashion, as we gather to remember and honor her.
