Alice M. Caron of Norwich, CT passed away peacefully on August 19 at the age of 103. Born in Sprague, CT on May 28, 1919, she was a daughter of Joseph Pierre and Marie Louise Beauchemin, and was also pre-deceased by four brothers and five sisters. She was married to the late Ovilar V Caron (1973), and together they are survived by their four children – Valerie J Campbell(Glen, deceased), Gail A Braun(Kenneth), Emma L Tremblay(Edward), and William H Caron(Nancy) – as well as seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Following graduation from Monson High School (MA), in 1936, she worked at the Backus Hospital in Norwich as a maid in the Nurses Residence where she also resided. After her marriage in 1941, Alice was employed by the American Thermos Company (later King-Seeley Thermos Division) on Laurel Hill Avenue for many years, where she also served on the employees activities committee. After the company left Norwich, she worked as a volunteer for the Eastern Area Agency on Aging Senior Resources as a Medicare counselor for eleven years before being hired as a full-time employee where she worked until her retirement at the age of ninety-seven. She also served as President of the Norwich chapter of AARP, and served on the Board of Directors for many years.
Alice was an expert seamstress all her life and used her talents making clothing for herself and her girls. At the height of her skills, she hand-tailored several formal gowns and her son’s wedding jacket. In her later years, she learned cake decorating and ran a successful business making and decorating cakes for all occasions.
Alice loved life; her family and Senior Resources were her greatest joys. Her drive and energy always belied her age, and her vast life experience and wisdom was sought after and offered to all who knew her. All her life, she was a giver who gave joyfully to anyone who asked for her help, whether it was making Christmas fudge, sewing, knitting, crafts or just sage advice - never asking anything in return. She also loved her home on Asylum Street where she lived until she was ninety-eight years old. In the last five years of her life, she lived with her daughter Emma’s family in Norwich, where her every need was cared for by her loving granddaughter, Erica. Her one-hundredth birthday was celebrated at the Elks Lodge in Groton in 2019.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on September 17, 10:00AM at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Norwich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Area Agency on Aging Senior Resources, 19 Ohio Avenue, Suite 2, Norwich, CT 06360, or online at www.seniorresourcesec.org where you can scroll to the bottom of the page and see a picture of Alice.
