Anita Brodeur Glidden, 94, beloved wife and mother, passed away on Thursday, November 28th. Born to Rudolph and Cecile Brodeur in Meriden, Connecticut, she leaves behind 5 adoring children & their spouses: Norman Glidden & Jen Hayner of Bennington, VT, Laurna & Mike Sheehan of Enfield, CT, Janice & Fredd Baber of Port Charlotte, FL, Amy & Paul Marble of Manchester, CT, and Tom & Liz Glidden of East Haddam, CT. She also leaves 4 wonderful grandchildren: Erin Farrell and her husband Tim, Michael Cuyler, and Kate & Everett Glidden, as well as loving extended family Rich Cuyler, and John & Sharon Presch who coined the nickname “Ma G”. Anita was pre-deceased in 2018 by her loving husband, Harold Glidden.
Raised in a very large family in Cheshire, CT, Anita met Harold, the love of her life, at Lake Compounce in Bristol, CT where he charmed her, and they married on August 3rd, 1957. Anita spent the following years dedicated to loving her husband and raising her 5 children with affection, strength, games, and music! there was always music playing. . . or being made by Mom’s singing, Dad’s drumming, or one of our instruments. And many lively games of Life, Monopoly, and Set-Back were played over the years.
In retirement Anita and Harold became “snowbirds”, enjoying the winters at Anna Maria Island in Florida and splitting summers between Connecticut and the Princeton, Maine homestead. They both also loved to dance, even winning some dance contests. In their 61-year marriage, Anita was his rock and Harold was her wings.
She was a no-nonsense woman who always found a way to get things done. Whether it was making sure all of her 5 children went to college or putting a new roof on a barn, she always had a can-do attitude and didn’t let things stop her. Her passions all involved being creative in some way. They included gardening vegetables and herbs, caring for her farm animals, knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting, needlepoint, crewel embroidery and reading. Anita was always keeping her hands busy doing something creative.
Our mom loved traveling with our Dad. They both loved seafood and knew all the best places to go, whether in Maine or Florida. They were adventurous, enjoying ‘flying’ on water thru the Everglades on an airboat, deep sea fishing and cruising to Hawaii. They were the happiest when they were together, and now they are together again.
In her final years, Anita was well cared for at Seabury in Bloomfield, CT.
Mom loved her 3:30 PM “medicinal” chocolates to have and to share, her Louis L’Amour westerns, any nature or educational program, organizing the library, and dancing or being sarcastic in activities to make everybody laugh.
Our Family would like to thank the staff at The Waterman at Seabury and the Masonicare Hospice team for their compassionate care for Anita, and for us when we needed it.
A small family gathering was held in her honor, as she wished. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Seabury, or. . . just think of our Mom whenever you are doing something creative that brings you bliss, when you are enjoying the accomplishment of repairing some kind of woodworking, or listening to a big band or light jazz song like one of her favorites, “Stranger on the Shore”.
