Appolonia Michiels 1924-2019

Appolonia Michiels, JANUARY 12, 1924 – OCTOBER 10, 2019

Danbury, CT age 95 of Hartford CT, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at St. John Paul II Hospice, Thursday October 10, 2019.


Appolonia was born on January 12, 1924 in Mechelen, Belgium and immigrated to the United States in 1950. She graduated Elementary School in Belgium, and survived the Nazi occupation of Belgium as a young woman during WW II. After the war she worked as a Nurse Aid in London with veterans of WW II. During this time, she met a US merchant marine Julio Escalera Hernandez from Puerto Rico and immigrated to the United States of America, living in Brooklyn NY. They had one child born in Brooklyn NY with the given name Edwin Escalera at birth on April 16, 1952.


Appolonia had a passion for taking care of family and friends, she devoted herself to raising her son as a single parent and changed his name to Edwin Michiels when he was 8 years old. He later changed his name from Edwin McKinley Michiels to Edwin McKinley as he is now known.


Appolonia was known for her infectious smile, kindness, and singing, making friends easily. She was preceded in death by her many sisters and brothers being one of nine children. She was raised on the family farm in Belgium by her parents Mr. & Mrs. Michiels. It was with great joy that she was able to return to Belgium with her son Edwin when he was 21. He was able to meet his grandmother in a nursing home and her many family members. Her mother later passed at the age of 93.


Appolonia enjoyed attending mass at the Roman Catholic Church in New York City and elsewhere that she lived. She attended mass at The Good Shepherd parish on 207th Street and Broadway in New York City and The Hartford CT Cathedral on Farmington Ave in Hartford CT for many years. She also attended Bible study with her son provided by The Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research, Inc. learning about Yahweh Elohim, and Yahshua The Word made flesh (John 1:14), as revealed and witnessed by Dr. Henry C. Kinley as a result of the Divine Vision and Revelation given to him in 1931, establishing The Institute of Divine Metaphysical Research, Inc. www.idmr.net


Appolonia is survived by a son Edwin McKinley and his wife Rita McKinley of Elk Grove CA, and 3 grandchildren Alethea Michiels Mcmorris (LaGrange, NY), Skye Michiels, and Eliza Michiels (both of Philadelphia PA), and her four great grandchildren.
