Elizabeth (Bette) M. Nowakowski, 99, passed away at Windham Hospital in Windham, CT on December 4, 2020, just 5 weeks after the passing of her only child, daughter Paula J. Nowakowski. Bette was born on April 14, 1921 in Boston, MA to the late John and Mary Gulzinsky. She grew up in the Boston area eventually settling in Jewett City, CT after marrying the late Walter R. Nowakowski (Ret. U.S. Navy) on December 20, 1942 in Boston, MA.
Bette spent much of her career in industrial manufacturing working many years for Wyre Wynd, Inc. in Jewett City until she retired in 1982. Not one to sit idle, she then went to work for Cuisinart until it’s closing. Later in life, Bette devoted many hours as a volunteer in the Pharmacy department at Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT.
Bette enjoyed playing golf, visiting the local casinos, traveling, and spending time with family. She was a member of St. Mary Our Lady of the Rosary Parish of Jewett City and was an avid New England sports fan.
Bette was predeceased by her husband Walter, daughter Paula, sister Irene Fickel and brother Edward J. Gulzinski.
A joint celebration of life for Bette and Paula will be held at 11am on 13 November 2021 at St. Mary Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Jewett City, CT.
As the beloved wife and mother of United States Navy Veterans, it was Bette’s wish to reunite with Walter and Paula in eternal rest at sea, so her remains will be committed to the sea at a later date.
