Emanuel George Contos, 78, of Glastonbury, peacefully passed away on December 27th surrounded by his loving family after a long, strongly fought battle with kidney disease for 2 years. Born on January 20th, 1947, in Hartford, CT to the late George Contos and Millicent (Dunn) Contos Dush, he spent his childhood in Hartford and East Hartford, graduating from East Hartford High School and Central Connecticut University. After marriage he moved to Glastonbury and raised his family. He started his profession as a master carpenter/builder and worked on projects up until his illness physically kept him from doing what he loved.
Some of his greatest work accomplishments include office buildings and homes he designed, remodeled and built in and around Glastonbury. Along with carpentry, he enjoyed owning a coffeehouse in downtown Glastonbury with his family.
He led a full life that included boating on the Connecticut River, skiing in Vermont, and traveling to Cape Cod, St. Martin, and Atlantic City. He enjoyed bowling leagues, coaching women’s softball teams, watching football, dining out, and taking casino trips. He was also proud to serve on the Board at Buckingham Church. Through these experiences, he built lifelong relationships—wherever he went, he always seemed to know someone.
Known to all as Manny, he was always there when needed, not only to family but for anyone that knew him. He enjoyed throwing big summer parties inviting as many friends as possible and always making sure he had his favorite band there to provide live music for all to enjoy.
He was a devoted father and grandfather and very proud of each of his grandchildren and loved seeing and hearing about their accomplishments. His frequent inquiries of what everyone was up to will be sorely missed.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daugther Brenda Stepule and husband Andrew Dayon, his grandchildren, Bridgette Stepule, Brooke Stepule, Brianna Stepule, Bradley Stepule, Jason Dayon, Logan Contos, Nicholas Pezzente and great grandson, Aidan Rolfe, his niece, Nicole Calabrese and her husband Nick and their daughter Sophia, his dear friend, Vern King and his caretaker Victoria (who we sincerely thank for her caregiving). He was predeasesed by his brother, Nicholas and his beloved son, Manny, Jr.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 7th at 11:00 a.m. at Buckingham Church, 16 Cricket Lane, Glastonbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital in memory of Manny.
