Emilie Strein Mackey 1935–2019

Emilie took flight with the angels on Monday, March 11, 2019 at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born in Mannheim, Germany on August 15, 1935

Emilie is survived by her spouse of more than 60 years; Alfred W. Mackey, three children; daughter Helga Mackey (husband Terry Fardon), son Alfred F. Mackey (wife Laura Mackey), and daughter Sioux Mackey.

She is also survived by her 3 brothers; Erwin, Kurt and Herman Strein, 2 sisters; Inga Kerschbaum and Irmgard Salm in Germany, by her six grandchildren; Ashli, Lauren, Jacqueline and Caroline Mackey, Zachary & Nicolette Fardon, and her great granddaughter; Ayela.

Emilie and Alfred were married in Germany on December 15, 1958.

She immigrated to the United States the following year. With her husband Alfred and three children, they purchased Mackey’s Bait & Tackle Shop from her mother-in-law Evelyn Mackey, becoming a second-generation family-owned business in 1975. Emilie was always ready with a kind word, caring heart, a hearty meal and fabulous homemade desserts for friends; the same recipes and hospitality taught to her by her mother in Germany each Sunday afternoon in appreciation of their neighbors, friends and family.

Emilie was also an avid gardener and naturalist, she and her husband taught their children and grandchildren, the gift of nature and eating closest to the Earth; picking and canning in-season fruits and veggies, to carry the family through each winter.

Memorial services will be private. Although Emilie truly desired that her friends and family should enjoy life, she was mindful of her fellow man and to be a refuge to them whenever needed.
