Harold Le Roy Givens 1928-2021

Harold Le Roy Givens, 92, known to his family as "Pops" and friends as "Harry-O," passed peacefully on Monday, July 19, 2021, in New Haven, CT. On December 27, 1928, he was born in Springfield, MA, to the late Robert Givens and Anna (Dickerson) Givens. Affectionately known to his friends and the community as ‘Harry O’ was an avid sports fan who especially enjoyed basketball and football. He was also a proud Navy veteran who honorably served in World War II.

He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Selma Lavorick Knight; 2 sons Brian and Lance; 2 brothers Kenneth and Robert; 2 sisters June Victoria and Renee Hightower; and daughter in law, Anita Givens.

He leaves to cherish his memory his son Brett Givens of Maryland; brother, Paul Givens of New York; his daughter in law Jackie (DuBose) Givens of South Carolina; 4 granddaughters (Mignon Texidor, Eboni Tyrice, Monique Givens, and Monica Givens); 3 grandsons (Brett D. Givens, Brian Givens Jr., and Diontae Jones, of Minneapolis) along with a host of great-grandchildren; his loving partner, Mary O’Toole along with a host of relatives and friends who loved him dearly.

A 1 PM service with military honors will be held on Friday, August 13th at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown. A repast for family and friends will follow at the Knickerbocker’s Club in New Haven from 2 PM to 5 PM.
