Janusz Stygares, beloved husband, father, and educator, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 3, 2025. He was 76 years old.

Born in Kraków, Poland, Janusz centered his life around his love for family, literature, music, education, and sports.

In addition to a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, he earned a master’s degree and doctorate in English Studies from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, where he began a distinguished academic career that would span more than four decades. His passion for linguistics, creative writing, and English composition took him from the lecture halls of Jagiellonian to the classrooms of the University of Connecticut, Central Connecticut State University, Southern Connecticut State University, and New Haven public schools, where he inspired generations of students to find their voices and embrace the written word.

Beyond his professional life, Janusz was a gifted host and cook, whose home and kitchen were a place of comfort and connection. The traditions he built around the table will continue to nourish his friends and family for generations. He took tremendous pride in the accomplishments of his children, whom he lovingly guided with patience and wisdom, and whose lives stand as a testament to his values and the legacy he leaves behind.

He is survived by Jolanta, Aggie, Tom, and five lively grandchildren in the United States, as well as Marta and Leszek in Poland.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025 at 11:00am ET at St. Joseph’s Church, 33 West St., Rockville, CT, with a reception to follow at 1:00pm ET at Manchester Country Club, 305 South Main St., Manchester, CT. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Church of Rockville, CT, where Janusz was a devout parishioner and lector.
