February 29,1948-June 16, 2026

It is with deep sorrow that we announce, Joan “Joanie” Sonia Marie (Cote) Roy, 78, was greeted at the gates of heaven by her late son, Kevin A. Roy, on Tuesday June 16, 2026, while surrounded by her family at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT.

Joan was born to the late Joseph Lionel Cote and Muriel (LaFrance) White in Lewiston, Maine on February 29, 1948. She moved to Hartford Connecticut as a young child where she attended Catholic school and learned to speak English. In the early 70’s, Joan made a home in East Hartford with her three children. She worked full-time as a machinist at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for many years and loved meeting new people while working part-time as a bartender at the VFW, the Army & Navy Club and The French Club. Her spunk and quirkiness made her easy to love by many. Joan enjoyed knitting and was always working on something for someone, but her greatest joy was when she got to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her love for them was impeccable. She also enjoyed visiting her grandchildren in New York, her family in Florida and her long weekends in Vermont, playing dominoes all night with Ken & Jim.

She leaves behind her son Herbert Roy, Jr. and his spouse Doris, and her daughter Jo Roy “nee” McBreairty all of Vernon CT, her grandchildren, Jordan McBreairty, Samantha (McBreairty) Connolly and her spouse Patrick all of Ellington CT, Travis McBreairty and his partner Sarah Fasano, and Darnell Roy all of Vernon CT, Madison Sylvester of Southington CT, Alexis (Roy) Crowe and her spouse Madison of Hoosick Falls NY, Victoria Roy and her partner Kyle Cox of Rochester NY, and Kevin Roy of Albany NY. Her great-grandchildren, Noah & Raelyn, Archer, Phoenix & Raine, and the newest addition, August. Joan is also survived by her sister Shirley (Cote) Rimscha of FL, and a half sister Rejeanne Cote of TN, as well as many other family members and friends.

Joan was predeceased by her step-mother Rita (Fortin) Côté of TN.

In respect of Joan’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

A Celebration of Life will be planned in the near future.
