Joanne Goggins Browne of Essex, Connecticut, passed away peacefully in hospice care on May 24, 2026.

Born on February 11, 1942, Joanne grew up in West Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Hall High School before attending Vermont College. While still young, she met George Browne, who would become her husband and lifelong companion. They married in 1965 and built a life together centered around family, home, and the quiet rituals that shape a life over decades. George passed away in 2009.

Joanne spent much of her life in West Hartford, Wilton, and later Ivoryton, Connecticut. She was funny in a way people remember: naturally, effortlessly, often unexpectedly. The kind of humor that lived inside ordinary moments and made people chuckle. She enjoyed gardening and listening to piano music. She loved books and was known for maintaining an ongoing and very real reading competition with George throughout their marriage.

More than anything, Joanne loved being a mother and grandmother. She leaves behind her children, Dawn McGreevey, Scott Browne, and Heather Delouchry and her husband Mike, along with her grandchildren Emily McGreevey; Emerson, Lincoln, and Evander Browne; Drew and Sara Delouchry.

She also leaves behind countless memories of basketball games on television, and enthusiastic loyalty to both UConn basketball and James Harden — always “Fear the Beard.”

A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held at the Scotch Plains Tavern in Essex, Connecticut on Sunday, May 31st from 12:00 - 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joanne’s memory to the Essex Library Association.
