John “Jack” Pryor Savage, West Hartford - A pioneering Connecticut entrepreneur whose early computer innovations transformed operations for insurance agencies, died peacefully surrounded by his family. He was 85.
Born in Hartford in 1940, Savage began his career as an insurance agent before turning his curiosity for technology into opportunity. In 1977, working on a Radio Shack computer, he developed software to speed and improve insurance quotes. That effort led to the founding of Savage Computers Inc. in Avon and, later, Agency Management Services (AMS), which became a leading provider of software for insurance and professional agencies. By the mid‑1980s, the company served hundreds of clients nationwide.
In the 1990s, Savage turned his focus to the emerging World Wide Web, creating some of the earliest municipal and community websites along Connecticut’s shoreline from his home in Essex.
He was an avid paddle ball player, boater, and tennis enthusiast, and had a love of Jack Russell terriers. Above all, he was devoted to his family.
Savage is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha “Marti” Savage; his children Pammela Savage and her partner Al Merone, Laura Punt and her husband Douglas Punt, Elizabeth Dlubac, and Bradley Parliman and his partner Jennifer Howe; several grandchildren; and a great‑grandson. He is also survived by his devoted brother Edward Savage and his wife Edith Savage; his sister Elizabeth Savage and her wife Roxy Bickerstaff; and Bill Savage and his partner Carol Johnson. He leaves behind his dedicated business partner and best friends Bruce Fernandez and wife Jacqueline Bernstein. Jack was predeceased by his parents, his sister Margaret Ray and his son John P. Savage Jr.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local dog rescue organization in Essex or West Hartford. Donate | Living The Dream
