Lawrence (Larry) Unikewicz, 67, of Portland, CT, passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2026.
Larry was born on February 16, 1959, in Portland, CT, where he lived his entire life. He was predeceased by his mother, Arlene (LaPlant) Unikewicz of Portland, CT, and his father, John “Cubby” Unikewicz of Ocala, FL. He graduated from Portland High School in 1977, where he made many lifelong friends. After high school, he built a career as a man of many trades, with a special passion for carpentry. Most recently, he served as Lead Driver and Yard Manager for Colby Direct Delivery, where he formed close bonds with his coworkers and will be greatly missed.
If you asked anyone around town, they would tell you Larry was the life of the party — loud, funny, and always ready with a one-liner just to get a laugh. He knew everyone, and everyone knew him (and could often hear him coming from a mile away). Larry was one of the most selfless men you could meet, always putting others first. He was an incredibly proud grandfather, never missing a chance to tell anyone who would listen about his grandchildren and how much they meant to him.
A devoted NASCAR fan, Larry always looked forward to his yearly trips to the races with some of his best friends. Although he sold his bike a few years back, he never lost his love for Harleys and would have happily taken one last ride.
He is survived by his three daughters: Taylor Wicke, her husband Kevin, and their son Wylder; Drew Unikewicz, her fiancé Anthony Solis, and their daughter Isabella and son Xander; and Brooke Unikewicz and her fiancé Leo Thomas, all of Portland, CT. He was so looking forward to walking Brooke down the aisle in just a few weeks. He is also survived by his three sisters: Linda (Brud) Miner of East Hampton, CT; Shirley (Tony) Marone of Glastonbury, CT; and Ruthie (Tim) Lang of Cape Coral, Florida; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who will miss him deeply.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The 1851 in Cromwell, CT, at 2:00 p.m. on May 2, 2026. All are welcome to join — whether you can stop by for just a few minutes or stay to celebrate all night, just as Larry would have wanted. In true Larry fashion, we invite you to share a story, share a laugh, and raise a shot of Jack Daniel’s in his honor.
