Margaret Grimes 2023

Updated: Apr 2, 2023

Margaret (Peggy) Grimes (83) of Waterbury passed away peacefully after a long illness on March 28, 2023.

Peggy will be remembered for her life of service to others. Earning a Bachelor’s degree from Southern CT State University and a Masters of Social Work from the University of Connecticut, Peggy had a long career as a psychiatric social worker for the State of Connecticut and later in private practice where her practical, straight forward advice and counseling helped countless families and individuals of all walks of life. As a long-time member of the Unity Church of Bridgeport CT, Peggy led many discussion groups and Bible Study classes and, perhaps most importantly, as a stalwart “friend of Bill W” for nearly 50 years, Peggy sponsored countless individuals on their own journeys to health, wholeness and sobriety. Peggy not only recited the Serenity prayer every day, she truly lived it. She loved friends, family and any creature that walked on four legs including rescuing an army of dogs and cats over her lifetime. Peggy loved the outdoors and, in her younger years loved horseback riding and cross-country skiing. She was also an avid fan of the UConn Women’s basketball program with season tickets for many years.

Peggy is predeceased by her sister Lois (Grimes) Hall, brother-in-law Robert Hall and her beloved brother Rev. Mark Grimes. She leaves behind niece Debbie (Hall) Thomas and her husband Oliver Thomas of Baton Rouge, LA, nephew Bill Hall of North Haven CT and niece Karen (Hall) Arendt and her husband Harry Arendt of Vernon, CT. The greatest of all great Aunts, she also leaves behind four great nephews Scott Anderson, Jeffrey Anderson, Brian Anderson and Robert Arendt and great niece Elena Arendt. Peggy will be best remembered for her enormous generosity and kindness and her legendary quick wit and sense of humor. She will be sorely missed.

The family will be holding private services but anyone wishing to leave a remembrance of Peggy can do so below. Anyone wishing to honor Peggy’s memory is encouraged to make a memorial donation to Unity Wordwide Ministries 200 Unity Circle N, Suite A, Lee's Summit MO 64086-6072 or to their local animal shelter.
