Mary Agnes Young


Mary Agnes Young, 92, of Madison, CT passed away peacefully at the Artis Home in Branford on July 18, 2023. Born in New York City on May 28, 1932, she was the daughter of Mary and William Chrissikos. In 1939 her family moved to Lafayette Indiana, where Mary later attended Purdue University, studying languages. One of her first jobs was translating the Encyclopedia Brittanica into Spanish. In 1964, she moved to Athens, Greece with her first husband, George Papageorgiou, and taught English at Pierce College and Athens College. After her husband’s passing, she met and married Charles Young of Madison, CT and Hydra, Greece. Dividing their time between Madison and Greece, the couple enjoyed forty-seven happy years together.

Mary was a passionate and talented knitter and a member of The Hearth’s Knitting Club in Madison. She loved to walk to Hammonasset Beach and swim there at high tide. She was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed celebrating her Greek ancestry at family gatherings.

Mary was predeceased by her brother, Louie Chrissikos, and her sister Alice Haldeman, both of Indiana. She is survived by her husband Charles and his three children Tina, Fay, and Charles and her nieces. Betsy and Sandra Miller. She is also survived by her nephews, Bill and Art Haldeman.

She was a kind and loving woman and will be dearly missed.
