Michael S. Smith 1942-2021

Michael S. Smith, 78, of Middletown, Connecticut, passed away on the 7th of April 2021, leaving his wife and best friend of over 58 years, Judith Tomassetti Smith, his loving daughter, Michelle and her husband, Richard Grierson.


Born on November 7, 1942 in Meriden, Connecticut, Michael was the eldest of three children to the late Nathalie (Bulka) and Michael A. Smith. Besides his wife, daughter and son-in-law, he is survived by his two sisters and their husbands, Kathryn and Charles Hand, Susan and James Stiles. He will be deeply missed and remembered by his in-laws Carol, Fred, Laurel and David Tomassetti, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Michael graduated from Platt High School, Class of 1960 and attended Quinnipiac University for two years. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1966, stationed aboard the USSBronson in Boston, MA, then the U.S. Naval Base in Groton, CT until his honorable discharge. He returned to Quinnipiac to finish his education and graduated with his degree in 1968. Michael went on to become a Certified Public Accountant and in 1971, he started his own accounting firm which he ran successfully with his wife Judy for over 40 years until their retirement in 2014.


Michael enjoyed playing golf until he bought his first boat. Over the next two decades his happiest memories were spent with family and friends cruising the Northeast, especially to his favorite boating locations, Block Island, Newport and the Hamptons. Once retired Michael and Judy enjoyed traveling to Italy and around the United States.


Out of respect for Michael’s wishes, no memorial services are scheduled. Donations in his memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849172, Boston, MA 02284-9172 or a charity of the donor’s choice.
