Paula J. Nowakowski, age 74, passed away unexpectedly on October 30, 2020 at Hartford Hospital. Daughter of Elizabeth (Bette) M. (Gulczinski) and the late Walter R. Nowakowski, Paula was born in Chelsea, MA on October 18, 1946. Paula grew up in Griswold (Jewett City), CT and attended local schools, graduating from Griswold High School class of 1964. After graduation she joined the U.S. Navy as a dental hygienist and was honorably discharged in 1968. Paula then attended college and worked various jobs, one of which was as a writer for the Cape Cod Times, while continuing to serve in the U.S. Navy Reserves. She received her Bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Political Science from the University of Maryland University College. Paula returned to active service as a journalist in 1986 and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1999. Following her military career, she was employed with the Department of State until 2005. She then returned to her childhood home in Griswold, CT to care for her mother.
She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Our Lady of the Rosary Parish of Jewett City, CT for which she ran their prayer line. She was a charter member of the Columbiettes of Jewett City, CT, and was the driving force behind their annual golf tournament fundraiser. Before health issues slowed her down Paula enjoyed golfing, playing the guitar and singing. She was a devoted daughter, cousin and friend and was extremely proud to be a veteran.
Paula leaves behind her mother, as well as many cousins and friends, some of whom selflessly provided care and support to Paula and her mother over the past few years. A special thank you to Gracie with Griswold Home Care, and the staff at Douglas Manor in Windham for their care and compassion during her stay.
Due to COVID 19 restrictions, a celebration of her life will be held at a future date.
Donations in Paula’s memory may be made to the Columbiettes of Jewett City, 39 Janice Lane, Griswold, CT 06351.
