Richard Tamminen, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Born on March 5, 1944 in Winsted, CT to Herman and Carmella (Diulio) Tamminen, “Dickie” always lived life on his terms. His soul holding as many miles as it did stories from places all over the US that he’d traveled as an over the road truck driver. By far, his favorite place was his home in New Hartford, CT. Even in his last days, Dickie maintained his hallmark Tamminen humor, twinkle in his eye and that slight Finnish smirk on his face when a mischievous thought was brewing. While we are saddened by the unexpected loss, we enjoyed his company right to the end, talking about football, listening to sound advice, reminiscing about wonderful dogs, laughing about terrible hospital coffee, and so many more memories.
Richard is survived by his children, Richard Tamminen, Jr. & Christy Tellier, grandsons Scott Tamminen, Craig Shewchuk, William Tellier (Katelyn Mentone) & Christopher Tellier, siblings John Tamminen, Janet Stella, Susan & George Closson, mother-in-law Mary Sherman, ex-wife Karen Coon, and many nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom he loved and considered close family. Richard was predeceased by siblings Anita Nelson, Peter Tamminen & Patrick Tamminen and children Holly Tamminen & Chad Tamminen.
As we reflect on Richard’s life, we are reminded that life should always be lived with joy, laughter and an occasional shocking question to keep things interesting. Use your mirrors when you drive, never take wooden nickles, and never be afraid to start a conversation with: can I ask you a personal question?
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025 from 1-4 at Rowley Grill & Tap, 19 Rowley Street, Winsted.
