Rosa Scaggs

East Lyme – Rosa Maria Scaggs, 70, of East Lyme passed away at home Saturday, June 6, 2026, after a long battle with dementia. She was born Oct. 10, 1955, in Buenaventura, Colombia, the daughter of Leonidas Viveros Burbano and Maria Josefina Gongora de Viveros. 


Rosa grew up in Cali, Colombia. She attended high school at Colegio Los Ángeles del Norte, graduating in 1973. She then attended the Universidad Autónoma de Occidente and graduated in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in economics. Rosa earned professional certificates in Secretarial Assistant, Accounting, Marketing, and International Trade. While pursuing her college education, she began working at her father’s customs brokerage firm learning the business from the ground up. Eventually, working as the manager for the company.

Following her marriage in Miramar, Fla. to former husband and lifelong friend Ignacio Scaggs, Rosa relocated to East Lyme in 1999. She worked at Thomas G. Faria Corporation, in Uncasville before retiring in 2017.

Rosa truly loved the Christmas season; she was happiest when sharing holidays and cherished the moments with her family and friends. She had a passion for listening to music and dancing salsa. An avid animal lover, she found endless joy in the companionship of cats and dogs. She loved the beauty of nature from camping in the Oregon mountains to relaxing at the beach.

Rosa is survived by her mother Maria Josefina Gongora de Viveros of Cali, Colombia; brother Leonidas Viveros Gongora of Cali, Colombia; sister Josefina Viveros Gongora of Los Angeles, Calif.; son Jose Ibarra of Glastonbury; and nieces Daniela Viveros and Ivana Jason both of Los Angeles, Calif.; former husband Ignacio Scaggs of East Lyme. Rosa was predeceased by her father Leonidas Viveros Burbano.


Thanks, and appreciations go out to Rosa’s former husband and caregiver, Ignacio Scaggs and Hartford HealthCare at Home Hospice Organization. We also want to thank family friends for their help and support through this journey, especially Socorro and Gustavo Borda of Lake Worth, Fla.

No memorial services will be held in Connecticut. She will be laid to rest with private services at the Fircrest Cemetery located in Monmouth, Oregon at a later date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers or memorial contributions, the family asks for your thoughts and prayers.
