Tonnie van den Brink passed away peacefully in her sleep after a short illness. She was 86 years old. Born in Borne, Netherlands she was a resident of West Hartford, CT and formerly of Westport, CT.

Born during World War II in the fully occupied Netherlands, she witnessed the hardships and human suffering of war at a very young age. These early experiences shaped a deep compassion for others and inspired her lifelong desire to help people, nurturing an early calling to become a nurse.

Life, however, led her down a different path when she met the man who would become her husband. After they married, she relocated with him to Central America for his work. Despite the dramatic change in language, culture, and surroundings, she embraced the adventure wholeheartedly. With determination and curiosity, she immersed herself in language classes and quickly grew to appreciate the rhythm, culture, and people of her new home.

Throughout her life she would relocate two more times—first to Switzerland and later to the United States—approaching each new chapter with the same enthusiasm, resilience, and openness. America ultimately became her home and the place of her final rest.

A passionate traveler and lifelong learner, she delighted in experiencing different cultures and meeting new people. She spoke five languages fluently and had a remarkable gift for connecting with others. Anyone fortunate enough to meet her was touched by her warmth and sincerity. Her joy, grace, kindness, and quiet strength remained present even during her illness.

She is survived by her two children and their spouses: her son Hans and daughter-in-law Sheri of Georgia, and her daughter Elisabeth and son-in-law Nigel of Connecticut. She is also survived by her beloved granddaughters, Bailea (husband Matthew) of New York and Alexandra of Connecticut, and her cherished great-granddaughters, Kylie and Skylar.

She was one of a kind and her passing leaves a vast and tremendous void in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy of compassion, resilience, and love for people and cultures will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers please donate to your local food bank in her honor.
