Mystic - Victoria (D’Alfonso) Campbell, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on Dec. 21, 2025, at L&M Hospital/Yale NH Health, New London.
She was born July 22, 1932 in Bronx, New York to Dominick & Rose (DiRoma) D’Alfonso and moved to Colchester when she was 9 years old. There she graduated from Bacon Academy (Class of 1949), became a licensed hairdresser in 1951, gave birth to five children between 1953 and 1957, and opened a salon in her home. She loved hairdressing and her clients. When the salon eventually gave way to another bedroom, she helped operate her first husband’s Real Estate and Insurance Agency, and later proudly served as Deputy Sheriff at the Superior Court in New London, a role that displayed her backbone and heart.
Amidst it all, she managed to keep her home filled with warm meals, love, laughter and discipline in equal measure. Her unwavering devotion to family always came first.
Fate brought her a second chance at love when she married her beloved husband, Millard “Don” Campbell (predeceased) and together, they built a cherished home on West Road in Colchester - a place where family gathered making memories and where Victoria’s gift of storytelling shined. With her sharp memory, she would captivate her audience as when she fondly recalled milking cows with her elder sister, who would sing while Vicki milked, for “happy cows produce more milk”. This homestead remains a living part of her legacy today.
Victoria’s life wasn’t all work. One of her greatest pleasures was knitting, a skill she learned early on and developed into expert craftsmanship over the years. After selecting a pattern, she would set out to find the “just right” yarn & colors. No pattern was too tough, as family can attest, she did it all; from mittens, hats & baby blankets, to sweaters, dresses & coats - all of her creations stood the test of time.
She was strong, sharp, full of spirit and retained her humor, clarity, and grace far longer than most. Though her life held hardship, she radiated resilience, laughter and love. Her wit was unmatched, her laugh contagious, and even near the end, her hair and makeup were always beautifully done – because nothing could stop Victoria from looking her best.
As the years passed, Victoria’s faith became a deep source of comfort. She associated with Jehovah’s Witnesses and found fulfillment, peace and spiritual family. Her faith remained her anchor until the end.
Victoria is survived by her four children: Deb Bochain of Lebanon, Bobby Clark & Linda of Mystic, Patty Rutka & Tom of Colchester, and Ron Clark of Colchester; ten grandchildren (Sarah Turner, Anissa Lee, Thad Bochain, Briana Lawrence, Brandon Clark, Avery Clark, Patrick Rutka, Allison Rutka, Kelsey Perez, & Ronald Joseph Clark); and sixteen great-grandchildren. In addition to her late husband Don, Victoria was predeceased by her eldest daughter, Vicki Turner; sons-in-law Ted Bochain & Richard Turner; sisters, Gloria D’Alfonso & Rose Viti; and first husband, Bob Clark, Sr.
The family sincerely appreciates all the staff at L&M/Yale NH Health and Hospice, and extends a special thank you to Alexa, Anissa, Andy, Louie, John and many others for their compassionate care.
Victoria’s quick wit, sharp mind and inspiring stories will be missed dearly. She will be forever remembered as a dearly beloved mother, grandmother & great-grandmother “Gigi”, sister, cousin, and friend. Her legacy lives on in the generations she guided, in the love she gave, and in stories she leaves behind. In Victoria’s words, “Be humble, be kind and love one another”.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
